About Hair Transplant Surgery

What's Involved?

Hair Restoration Surgery (or Hair Transplant Surgery) is a minor surgical procedure to treat the effects of Hair Loss. During the procedure, hair follicles are taken from a 'donor area', (at the back of the scalp where the hair follicles are more densely packed) and placed into incisions made by the surgeon in the balding area of the scalp.

Because the hair that we remove from the donor area is genetically programmed not to fall out because of male pattern baldness (MPB) the hair will continue growing on the bald scalp where it has been relocated, just as it would have done if it had remained in the donor area. That is why hair transplantation can give you your own hair back from an area it used to be. This is why it won't fall out again.

It is important for each patient to fully understand that having a hair transplant procedure does not create any new hair but in fact redistributes the whole existing follicle from the donor area to the recipient area.

Types of Hair Transplant Surgery - FUT and FUE

There are 2 main methods of hair transplant surgery, both being very similar in that hair is taken from a donor area and placed into the thinning or bald areas of the scalp. The main difference between the 2 types of surgery is the way that the hair is taken (or 'harvested') from the donor area.

FUT: Follicular Unit Transplantation

The Follicular Unit Hair Transplant is performed as a day case minor surgical procedure under local anaesthetic. The Surgeon applies local anaesthetic to the donor area we want to take the hair from before removing a thin strip of that hairy scalp and individually separate all the follicular units. This thin strip of donor hair is 'harvested' from the donor area because it is the region of hair on the back of the head in which the hair is genetically programmed not to fall out. These hairs are permanent.

The donor strip is then placed under the microscope which is specifically designed for hair restoration surgery. The strip is then dissected into microscopic grafts of individual follicular units, of one to four hairs. This is a very important stage in your hair restoration surgery procedure and must be precise in order to gain the best yield from your donor area. These grafts are stored until such time as they are meticulously placed in the recipient sites created by our leading hair surgeon.

The recipient area is the area which we want to put the hair transplants back into. Usually this is the scalp – frontal, temples, hairline and/or crown.

These follicular unit grafts are then placed into pinprick incisions in the recipient area. This strip method of hair transplantation is often referred to as the "Gold Standard" as it's believed to be the most effective technique for transplanting hair.

FUE: Follicular Unit Extraction

With FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), the hair follicles are harvested individually, directly from the the donor area, instead of a strip being removed. This technique uses a microscopic punch to remove each individual hair graft, in the same way as an apple corer removes the core of an apple. FUE is still a relatively new technique made famous by various celebrities having the procedure done such as Wayne Rooney. This method of Hair Restoration has distinct advantages and disadvantages, sometimes depending on patient preference or characteristics.

Advantages Of FUE

  • No linear scar
  • Quicker recovery
  • Less down time following surgery
  • Better option for patients who have a tendency to keloid scar
  • Reduced pain and discomfort in donor area
  • May suit younger patients who need a small number of grafts in the hairline
  • For patients that require hair restoration in the frontal area of the head

It is important to ascertain your medical suitability for this procedure by having a detailed consultation and assessment from our leading surgeons.

Disadvantages Of FUE

  • You must completely shave your donor site short
  • Reduced yield than single strip method, less grafts
  • More expensive due to increased time spent harvesting donor hair
  • Decreased survival of grafts due to increased transection rates
  • Possible spotty or circular scarring in the donor area with larger cases
  • Larger procedures can take 2 or more successive days

After any Hair Transplant Surgery the hairs of the transplanted grafts will begin to grow at approximately 4 months after your procedure and continue through month's 10 – 12 post procedure. You should expect a final result after 12 months.
